Variety is the Spice of a Golfer’s Life
I know what you are likely to do as a golfer who has identified particular problems with his (or her) game. You are likely to be out there on the course or on the range practicing the same shots time after time in order to improve. This obviously is a good thing as if you have definitely identified a problem with a particular shot then
probably one of the only ways to improve it is to practice until you figure it out. If you practice a particular shot enough then when it comes to playing that shot for real then it will probably come a lot easier. However, you are probably missing a trick. If you only concentrate on practicing the shots which need improvement then you may be in danger of not practicing those elements of your game which you may not have identified as needing improvement.
It probably sounds obvious when you see this written down but if you practice until you are the master of lots of different elements of your golf game then you will undoubtedly improve your overall game and come the day of your club competition you will be able to outperform other players in lots more areas of the game.
You may think that there are parts of your golf game which don’t really require improvement. However, I have yet to meet someone who thinks that elements of his game are perfect. Even Tiger Woods acknowledges that perfection can probably never be achieved but striving for that perfection is the way you will continue to win games. So even if you don’t think it needs it, try different equipment and different techniques during practice and observe the results that this has. It may well have catastrophic results but at least you will know then that you shouldn’t try that particular technique or club for that type of shot during competition. And you never know, you may try something that results in a slight improvement.
What sort of things might you want to try? Ok, from a technique point of view, maybe you could try putting some spin on the ball. By mastering the art of putting backspin on the ball you may be able to better control where the ball ends up in order to be in a better position for the next shot. This may be especially useful where the course is considered to be fast.
From an equipment point of view it is obvious that you might want to try different clubs for similar shots in order to determine if the shot can be improved. However, have you ever thought of changing the balls you use? Probably not. Give it a try and see if it makes any difference. You could also try testing out different club designs or different club brands. You will probably find that after you have been playing the game for a while the balls and clubs you will be using will be different to the ones you started out with.
As I said before you will probably never achieve perfection but striving for perfection is something that most of not all golfers should be doing. Part of that journey is all about trying out different equipment and different techniques and the only time do this is during your practice sessions.
