The green – an important place for any golfer. Even the novice knows from watching that the majority of strokes appear in this place, the majority when compared to tee and fairway, though a few poor souls wind up in the bunker for eternity. No, the green is a place where the most time is spent, lining up a putt that may or may not work.

Putting requires skill, requires patience, but most of all, it requires an almost perfect environment. The wind, the rain, the grass…all must fall into alignment. Of course, that means that the thundering herds must not have torn up the grass between where the ball is and the hole.

The impact of a ball, whether by first, second, or fiftieth drive will leave a dent of some kind in the firm grass used on the green. This means that, if not altered, the grass will cause the next ball that travels over the same area to alter it’s path, possibly costing someone a shot or some money (though gambling is illegal and no golfer would ever bet on a shot.)

Another enemy to the green is the cleat. People walking with cleats on the green have to be careful (if not avoiding it altogether by not wearing them on the green) because the studs from the cleats will do their job and dig into the grass. The smoother the green, the truer the shot and this is what golfers must have. Ladies, watch the golf shoes on the green. You never know what damage you’re doing to someone’s game.

Of course, if you treading on the green is bad, what would a golf cart do? I don’t have the statistics in front of me presently for the weight of a standard golf cart, but I know they generally run in the range of several hundred pounds. Not one, but four or five hundred pounds. The tires will leave ruts, essentially turning the putting green into a green bowling alley, complete with gutters and the flag as a single pin. Not a place for skilled shots anymore. This is something that can’t be allowed and you all must be careful of.

Past that, there are the obvious rules. If someone’s putting, don’t stand between them and the hole. For those who once walked the stage, don’t upstage the performer. Don’t shout “You go girl” or “You da man” when someone is swinging. Then, there is a good chance you might eat the putter. Don’t mess with the golfer while they are shooting. Are there hard fast rules for that? Not really, but many things in etiquette aren’t hard fast rules.

There are other rules, some are written and must be learned from course to course. Where you can put your golf bags, what accessories can go with what golf bags, what clubs and how many (I know, there are rules set overall, but some courses seem to break them). Over all the rules of etiquette seem to boil down to common sense or even more simply, the Golden Rule. Do unto others as you’d have others do to you.

     The best golf swing advice I have ever been given was to stick to the fundamentals. This not only applies to the full swing tee shots and iron shots but also to all other various shots you have to play during a round of golf. Every type of shot that you will encounter has a basic fundamental way to approach it and than it may have variations from that, but you must begin with the fundamentals.

     In this article I would like to give you some good golf swing advice regarding the fundamentals of playing out of a green side bunker. Once you master the basics of playing from the sand trap around the green, you can easily move on to learning variations of the basic shot.

There are 4 keys to the basic sand shot from around the green:

1. Use your sand wedge. That’s what it’s made for. Hence, the name sand wedge.
2. Take an open stance. Your whole body alignment should be well left of your target on the green. Don’t worry! Stick to these fundamentals and the ball will go right where you want it to go.
3. Firm footing. It is essential that you get a firm stance in the sand. Move your feet from side to side to dig down into the sand to accomplish this if necessary. You must be able to maintain good balance during your swing.
4. Choke up. Because you ground your feet into the sand, you are now closer to the ball, so you need to compensate for that by choking up on the club.
5. Don’t look at the ball. The sand shot is played by hitting the sand about an inch to an inch and a half behind the ball. You need to focus on that spot and not the ball. On the swing the club head will slide under the ball and come out of the trap on a bed of sand. The club head will never touch the ball.

     Okay, I know that was 5 keys and not 4, but I had to throw in the one about using the sand wedge. Believe it or not, many amateur golfers are afraid to use the sand wedge.

     Master these keys for your green side sand shots and you’ll never worry about being in the sand again.

El Chaparral Golf Course is a beautiful course with a great layout that challenges all golfers.

Situated in a lovely area of countryside just outside La Calle Village on the Spain.

Hole 1: You drive over a barranca (dry ravine) to middle to right of the fairway. The hole is all uphill with slopes either side of the green however the rough is long and the ball will not always roll down. The green has a couple of levels.

Hole 2: This is a par 3 where again you drive over a long barranca and the green has two bunkers protecting it.

Hole 3: This is an interesting hole where big hitters can play over a mound on the left to give a chance of reaching in two, whereas the safe play is middle to left. There is a river about 100 meters before the green. The green is long and narrow and slopes away to the left.

Hole 4: A slightly uphill par 3 which always needs a club more than its distance.

Hole 5: A hole that is straight but due to trees and the undulations of the fairway it seems to meander. The green is small and long is out of bounds. Short and you will roll down a slope.

Hole 6: A par 5 where a drive down the middle is where you want to be. The green is at the bottom of a slope and is a blind shot. There is heavy rough all down the right and a dry river and gully to the left.

Hole7: Another Par 5 which can be reached in two. However the position is down the middle then over a corner of trees and bunkers to cut the dogleg right and a chance for a birdie. Or safely play the second shot straight and chip up hill onto the green in three.

Hole 8: A lovely hole that doglegs to the right. From the back tees it is hard to cut the corner as trees are all down the right. Don’t drive to big otherwise you will go past the fairway and into the trees and shrubs on the other side. The green has a slope running down to it on the left and falls away on the right.

Hole 9: Straight down the middle for this hole. There are a couple of dips in the fairway and the green is protected by bunkers.

Golf is getting more expensive to play.I love the gamebut the outlandish golf course green fees and cart costs are making it harder to afford.I believe the green fees started to rise in the 1990’s. Today it is hard to find a golf course that won’t charge you $50 for green fees on weekdays and more on the weekends. These fees are rising ahead of the cost of living.

What happened? I believe a lot of golf courses are being built to adapt to the weekend duffer’s game with plush fairways and manicured greens. This over indulgent need to provide perfect playing conditions has skyrocketed golf course maintenance budgets.

Whatever happened to the reasoning of building a course according to the lay of the land with all the slopes and valleys? Where the only maintenance being done was cutting the fairways and watering the greens? Mother Nature was in charge of the fairways and rough.I still play a few of those golf courses in Pennsylvania at $12 for green fees, $6 extra for a riding cart on a weekday. If it’s mid-summer you can expect semi-brown fairways. Your game changes according to the course conditions. Isn’t that what golf is all about, adapting to the course?

Also, many golf courses are being built to promote real estate in the area surrounding the golf courses. This will definitelyadd to the rise ofgreen fees. Are you being ripped-off?Another thing that has changed for the worse is the use of riding carts. This is a costly added expense to your golf game and a lot of times a needless or unnecessary expense. Let’s take a look at this expense.

Some golf courses make a cart mandatory which added to the green fees will raise their profits. Other courses require carts on the weekends but not on the weekdays. I suppose the thinking on mandatory weekend carts is it will help in speeding up play, which I don’t agree. Think about it, with or without a cart, it will take you 5 to 6 hours to complete the round on a weekend. You are being ripped off.

There are too many bad golfers playing on the weekend which will slow down play and make you wait endlessly to hit your next shot. When this type of situation occurs it will only hurt your game. You will tighten up, lose concentration and guzzle beer after beer waiting to hit your next shot. All you are getting out of this round of golf is a buzz-on and sunburn which you could have done in your own backyard at very little cost. My thinking on this is to avoid the 6 hours trying to play a round of golf on the weekend.

The biggest rip-off of all is on those golf courses that a cart is mandatory but you are only allowed to drive it on the cart path. This kind of golf is utterly ridiculous. Let’s take a look at this scenario.Suppose you hit your tee shot to the left and the cart path is on the right. Now what do you do? You don’t know what kind of lie you have and you don’t know the distance to the green for your next shot and it’s a long walk to your ball. So you take two to three clubs out of your bag and take the long walk to your ball. After you hit the ball, you take the long walk back to the golf cart. The big problem is that this type of play goes on all day long – for the whole round. So, I ask you, why do you have to pay for a cart when you are walking most of the time anyway? Are you being ripped off?

Wichita’s public golf course fees may go up

Golfers at city courses might soon be irritated by more than their hooks and slices. An advisory committee plans to recommend that the City Council increase season tickets, green fees and golf cart rental fees at five public courses.
