Any golfer knows the role of the golf balls in their plays. No matter how good a golfer is, if he is without golf balls then his skills have no value. Every golfer knows these facts. This is why golf balls had become the primary commodities among golfers.

There is no general way to determine which golf ball is best for individual players. This factor is almost entirely dependent on the golfer’s own preference, what he may do with the ball and how much will his pockets allow him.

For some, a single brand of golf ball says it all. They would stick to them for as long as they would want and most would never play if not playing with their particular brand of golf balls. Some people may call this insanity but this is an individual preference.

While a number of golfers may be practicing this, it is not thoroughly advisable to adopt this same attitude towards golf balls. The most ideal way of choosing balls is to use common sense, especially for beginning golfers.

A beginning golfer must never keep in mind what other people has to say about golf ball brands, may it be positive or negative. It must be pointed out that loosing balls for beginners is natural and this would mean that he need not focus yet on the quality or the brand name. What he needs is the low cost value the golf balls offer.

The best option for beginners is to buy golf balls sold in bulk, around 50 balls or so in a single bargain. These normally are balls that have been gathered from the greens and have been “recycled”. What’s good with these used balls is that they are commonly branded (but that doesn’t matter actually) and one need not grieve for having lost any of such balls. On the average, losing a golf ball is around a hundred percent for most beginners through sessions of hit practicing.

With upgrades in the skills come the upgrades on the ball qualities. But this still don’t suggest that intermediate players should rush to nearby golfing supplies and buy the most expensive balls from there. The golfer must not compromise price for his level of skill.

The golf balls he buys next will depend on his skill level. If he has great tendencies on failing on hits, he still needs to stay put with cheap balls. But this is not to the extent of using the same used balls. This time buy new inexpensive balls.

If for instance the golfer usually miss-hit the balls, then the balata-covered balls is nor the most appropriate ball to choose. Scratch players on the other hand would most likely prefer the golf balls that would offer lesser spin and more control.

As the basic theories for golfing, and most sports in that case explain, the skill improves with the frequency of playing. With improvements on the golfer’s skills, he may result to trying new golf ball brands. Through this, he may determine what golf ball brands will suit him best. But this doesn’t end here nor this factor decides what type of games the golfer may produce. He still have to reconsider other golfing components such as the golf clubs, the golf courses and other golfing accessories.

What is the perfect score for a round of golf? Ben Hogan answered this question once but did not elaborate. So let’s find the answer step by step.

Playing scratch is the ultimate dream of all double digit handicappers though it is the single digit handicapper who does actually achieve it once in a while. It is not uncommon for a good pro, however, to play nearly error free golf and also score a few birdies, thus posting a score in the mid-60s. These pros, however, are within striking chance of a birdie on most of the holes they play and there is no reason to think that with some luck thrown in, one day somebody will birdie each of the 18 holes in a round.

Yet, 54 is obviously not the perfect score for we have not taken into account the eagle possibilities in the par 5s, a real possibility with the long hitting pros today. If a player were to shoot all birdies in the other holes and also make eagles in all the par 5s, taking the average of four par 5s for a 18 hole course, the score will be 50.

But this leaves out the possibility of scoring holes in one, a real possibility. In fact, Arnold Palmer scored holes in one on the same par 3 hole on consecutive days of play. So, it is something which can be done and repeated too. Most people attribute holes in one entirely to luck. Yet, skill obviously plays a substantial part for only a well-struck ball gives luck a chance to hole it. No doubt, even a good shot requires luck to roll into the cup but we are talking of perfect score here. So assuming lots of luck, holes in one in all four par3s of a typical 18 hole golf course will give a score of 46 provided, of course, birdies and eagles are also made as described earlier. All this looks quite improbable but perfection is not something routine or probable.

I am sure you can guess that scores can conceivably be lower. Why, green in regulation for par 4 is two shots-far too many, some may say. Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Ernie Els and many others routinely drive the green in short par fours. In fact, the likes of J B Holmes and Bubba Watson are known to bomb 400 yard drives when they get going. And if you can reach the green in one shot, it shouldn’t be too difficult to putt the ball into the hole with your second stroke. It’s only an eagle. Suppose you could do it for all the ten par 4 holes in a round, your score goes down to 36. But, if you are such a long and accurate hitter so as to reach all the par 4s in one shot, it would not be too much to expect you to drive a par 5 within short wedge distance and then hole the wedge shot with a little luck. You would have scored an albatross. If Gene Sarazen could hole it at Augusta from 235 yards, surely you can do it from about a hundred odd yards you have left it to the hole after your first shot. If you could double- eagle all the four par 5s, then you have arrived at the score of 32 which is not bad but not perfect yet.

For, if you are reaching the par fours in one shot, you deserve the luck it takes to make the ball trickle into the hole. If you can reach it, you can hole it and if you can do it once, you can do it again. There is strong logic to that and golf mind-doctors would approve of the way you have not allowed any of the probability equations to clutter your mind. All that your mind recalls is that Swami Vivekananda scored a hole in one on a par four hole with his first golf shot ever. You have now arrived at the sweet score of 22.

Now, we are close but we need to take into account the long hitting champions with their so called illegal drivers who can sometimes touch 600 yards. And if you can reach a par five green in one shot, you can hole it too. It would, in fact, be surprising if you didn’t considering your consistent hole-in-one play on this round. Your score is now 18. You can’t go lower than that for even if you make the ball magically carry to the hole from the tee, it will either count as a stroke or you will have to play the shot again without penalty.

Choosing the right ball is critical to cutting your golf handicap. A ball impacts your game almost as much as your clubs, so it’s important to choose a ball that’s right for you. Below is a six-step process for selecting the right golf ball, a process I often review in my golf lessons and golf tips. It’s a relatively new selection approach. But first, let’s review the standard historical approach to choosing a golf ball.

Standard Selection Approach

With this approach you chose a golf ball going from the tee forward. In other words, you hit balls from the tee and observed their performance characteristics. You based your decisions primarily on control and distance, depending on their preference.

This approach was appropriate when ball-manufacturing technology was simpler. Here were your options.

1.If you wanted the ultimate in control, you chose a three-piece with a balata cover. It offered high-spin rates, soft feel, and good maneuverability, but it lacked durability. I used to recommend this ball in my golf lessons and golf tips for players with low golf handicaps adept at shot making.

2.If you wanted the ultimate in distance, you chose a two-piece ball with a Surlyn cover. This ball would travel far and last a long time. Unfortunately, its lack of spin greatly reduced control, especially around the greens. I used to recommend this ball for players with high golf handicaps who needed distance more than control.

3.If you wanted something in between, you choose a three-piece ball with a Surlyn cover. With this ball, you sacrificed a little control for more distance and durability. This ball worked relatively well.

This process worked well for a long time. But it’s less appropriate for evaluating today’s golf balls, which incorporate the latest advancements in technology.

Breakthroughs in Technology

Ball manufacturing technology saw several breakthroughs in the 1990s and beyond, complicating selection. Multilayer balls, like the Top-Flite Strata, which provide less spin for more distance and a softer cover for better control around the greens, hit the market in 1996, followed by Titleist’s Pro V1a solid-core, distance ballin 2000. Nike’s One and Titleist’s Next also debuted in the last 10 years.

While these balls all represented technological breakthroughs, they challenged the standard approach ball selection. Basically, you still chose a ball from the tee going forward based on distance and control.

A New Selection Approach

Today, there’s another approach to choosing a ball. This approach is based on going from the green backwards. It’s proving more appropriate for today’s game. Below is a six-step methodology for choosing a ball based on this new approach.

Step 1: Define Your Needs.

First, you need to (1) assess your game, (2) define your needs, and (3) decide what you want and don’t want from a ball. Defining your needs is crucial to choosing the right ball. Remember not everyone with the same ball-striking ability, golf handicap, and/or swing speed will play the same ball. Ask yourself such questions as ‘Do I need more distance?’, ‘Do I need more control with my irons?’

Step 2: Chose Test Balls

Select several balls you want to test. Base your decision on your defined needs. Try selecting balls from each categorymultilayered, two-piece, and super soft, low compressionto see how they test. Remember not every manufacturer’s models of the same type ball will react exactly alike.

Step 3: Test from the Fringe

Take the test balls to the fringe of the green. Hit some chip shots and pitch shots, and observe the results. See which balls hit the green and ‘check’ and which hit the green and release. Then, hit some putts and sand-shots. Observe performances. In general, the multilayer balls will feel softer, fly a bit low, and stop or check more on the green than their two-piece counterparts. Super-soft balls will roll the farthest with the least amount of spin after hitting the ground.

Step 4: Test from 100 Yards

Take the balls and move out into the fairway to the 100-yard marker. Test each ball from that point and observe each ball’s checking and releasing characteristics after it hits the green.

Step 5: Test Balls from 150 yards

Now, take your balls out to the 150-yard marker and hit from there. Observe the results. Use the same criteria to evaluate each ball.

Step 6: Test Balls from the Tee

Go to the tee box and hit the balls with your driver. Look for drives that reach their apex or highest point quickly and then level out and carry far down range. What you don’t want to see are drives that start low and then shoot up like a jet plane taking off. Such shots indicate that the driver has added too much spin to the ball, resulting in shorter drives that hook or slice more.

Now, obviously you can’t necessarily go out onto the course to do all this testing. Your local range or practice area will work just fine. Once you’ve completed these steps, you’re ready to choose. Base your decision on the most meaningful combination of performance qualitiesmeaningful to you, that is. For example, golfers who base their iron play on shots that hit and bite close to where they land will probably prefer a multilayer ball, even if it means sacrificing a little trajectory and distance.

Remember a golf ball impacts your game almost as much as your clubs. If the ball you choose doesn’t feel right after selecting it, try another. Give each ball a fair trail.

Choosing a ball that’s right for you, as I say in my golf lessons and golf tips, takes some work, but it’s well worth the effort. Having the right ball is crucial to improving your game and lowering your golf handicap. It also helps build self-confidence. Choose wisely.

If you cannot mentally picture the ball going where you want it to go, then you will never be able to get it there. So next time you step up to the tee box, take your time, picture the perfect drive you want, and stick the ball right down the middle of the fairway.
