Father and Daughter in golf

Does your father love to golf more than anything else in the world? If so you are not alone, golf is an extremely popular sport world-wide. Although Dad’s love of golf may make him difficult to track down during the weekend, choosing a Father’s Day gift for him is easy. As long as you find items which are golf themed, you have made the perfect choice.

Your dad, grandpa, brother or uncle may already have a set of golf clubs, but there are plenty of great golf items available that he might not have. Chances are he’d love to open a package containing a great golf gift this Father’s Day. The following are some examples of golf items that would make a great Father’s Day gift.

Golf Windshirt

Serious golfers do not let a windy day keep them off the course, not to mention keep them off of their game. A windshirt can help keep your dad comfortable on the days when the wind is blowing.

Golf Polo Shirt

A polo shirt is the traditional shirt of golfers. A polo that is made specifically for golfers will help him tee off in style and comfort. Some stores allow for personalization of the shirt, such as adding initials or his name to the shirt itself.

Photo frame

If your dad spends that much time on the golf course, he is bound to have some photos of his more successful days. Hunt one down and buy a golf themed photo frame to put it in. Wrap it up and watch his smile when he opens this thoughtful gift.

Golf Themed Baseball Ha t

It is hard to hit a hole in one if the sun is glaring in your eyes. A baseball hat can help keep the sun out of your dad’s eyes while he is on the course. The hat does not have to be golf themed; any baseball hat will do, but a hat that has some sort of golf connection fits the atmosphere out on the course all the better.

Comfortable Sweatshirt

When your father is out on the golf course on a chilly afternoon, he will love having a golf-themed or personalized sweatshirt to throw on for comfort; especially if it is from you. You can get him one that says “World’s Best Golfer” or “World’s Best Dad,” and he’ll be proud to wear it.

Personalized Golf Balls

Every golfer can always use more golf balls. Buy a dozen or two dozen golf balls which can be personalized. Your father’s initials or last name can be added for a really personal and useful Father’s Day gift.

Photo Golf Balls

If you want to get your father some golf balls that he is going to cherish instead of hit into the sand trap, consider photo golf balls. Place pictures of yourself or the entire family on a set of a dozen golf balls and he’ll take extra precautions not to lose them.

Golf Towel

From wiping down clubs to wiping off mustard on his shirt from the hotdog he got at the snack stand by the 9th hole, a golf towel has many uses. Personalize it with dad’s name or initials and he will never get it mixed up with anyone else’s.

Personalized Money Clip

When your father has to pay up on a bet on the golf course, or treat his friends to a round of drinks after their game, he can do it in style with a money clip monogrammed with his initials.

Golf Themed Mug

What does your dad do before hitting the golf course in the morning? Does he have a cup of coffee, or perhaps have a cup of tea before a long round in the early spring or late summer? If so, get your father in the golf mood with a golf themed mug that will hold his coffee and get his mind in the game.

Beer Mugs

After 18 holes, does your dad like to come home and have a cold beer? If he does, then he’ll appreciate a nice beer mug. Golf themed or not, if it is a gift from you for Father’s Day, it will be the one he reaches for at the end of a game.

Keychain

Dad may not want to carry all his keys on the golf course, but he will need the key to his locker in the clubhouse with him. Give him a special keychain to hold that key so he does not have to carry a bulky set around with him for 18 holes.

Not all Father’s Day gifts for the golf loving father need to be golf themed. If it is something that he can use on the golf course or something that will remind him of how much his family loves him while he is on the golf course, the golf loving dad will love a gift like that as well.

Happy fathers Day

The Green – Golf Etiquette Continued

The green – an important place for any golfer. Even the novice knows from watching that the majority of strokes appear in this place, the majority when compared to tee and fairway, though a few poor souls wind up in the bunker for eternity. No, the green is a place where the most time is spent, lining up a putt that may or may not work.

The green golf

Putting requires skill, requires patience, but most of all, it requires an almost perfect environment. The wind, the rain, the grass…all must fall into alignment. Of course, that means that the thundering herds must not have torn up the grass between where the ball is and the hole.

The impact of a ball, whether by first, second, or fiftieth drive will leave a dent of some kind in the firm grass used on the green. This means that, if not altered, the grass will cause the next ball that travels over the same area to alter it’s path, possibly costing someone a shot or some money (though gambling is illegal and no golfer would ever bet on a shot.)

Another enemy to the green is the cleat. People walking with cleats on the green have to be careful (if not avoiding it altogether by not wearing them on the green) because the studs from the cleats will do their job and dig into the grass. The smoother the green, the truer the shot and this is what golfers must have. Ladies, watch the golf shoes on the green. You never know what damage you’re doing to someone’s game.

Of course, if you treading on the green is bad, what would a golf cart do? I don’t have the statistics in front of me presently for the weight of a standard golf cart, but I know they generally run in the range of several hundred pounds. Not one, but four or five hundred pounds. The tires will leave ruts, essentially turning the putting green into a green bowling alley, complete with gutters and the flag as a single pin. Not a place for skilled shots anymore. This is something that can’t be allowed and you all must be careful of.

Past that, there are the obvious rules. If someone’s putting, don’t stand between them and the hole. For those who once walked the stage, don’t upstage the performer. Don’t shout “You go girl” or “You da man” when someone is swinging. Then, there is a good chance you might eat the putter. Don’t mess with the golfer while they are shooting. Are there hard fast rules for that? Not really, but many things in etiquette aren’t hard fast rules.

There are other rules, some are written and must be learned from course to course. Where you can put your golf bags, what accessories can go with what golf bags, what clubs and how many (I know, there are rules set overall, but some courses seem to break them). Over all the rules of etiquette seem to boil down to common sense or even more simply, the Golden Rule. Do unto others as you’d have others do to you.

How to play golf in green etiquette

Tips to becoming a wiked good golf caddy?

Think “it’s 125 to clear the hazard, 135 to the front of the green, 141 to the flag, 150 to the back” Off the tee, give yardages to the front of bunkers and/or to clear a bunker. If there’s a spot to avoid/aim for that may not seem. There are numerous books devoted to golf etiquette.

Read a green

One of the most difficult aspects of the game of golf is learning to read a green correctly, but using a few simple tricks and techniques can help your green reading and improve your putting quickly and easily.

Finding The Highest Point

This is an old golfing trick, but a good one. Before taking you putt look around the green and find it’s highest point. Once you know the highest point imagine a bucket of water being poured on it. Try to picture exactly where the water will flow. Doing this will give you a could idea of the slope of the green.

You can also judge the slope by looking large bodies of water near by. In general the green will always fall towards the water.

Walk Around the Green and Feel the Ground Under Your Feet

A neat trick for getting a feel for the green is to close your eyes and walk slowing from where you ball lies to the hole.

Doing this will give you an excellent feel for the way the green slopes. For example the slope of a green might be all downhill until just before the hole. I you did not walk the line of your putt you may not know this and your putt will probably fall short.

Look at Your Putt From a Different Perspective

Sometimes walking around the green and looking at your putt from a different perspective can mean the difference between your ball going into the hole or not.

The topic for our article today is golf iron shots. You have hit a good drive and now it`s time to hit a quality iron shot. There are many factors that come into play but, for today, we are going to review four (4) tips that will help us to hit quality iron shots and, in turn, lower our golf scores.

These golf iron shot tips will help you to go through the thought process that will produce quality golf shots. You will be amazed how quickly your golf scores will come down. Just using some common sense can dramatically effect how we play and our golf scores, plus, did I mention, your enjoyment of the game!

  Golf Iron Shots

Four (4) Golf Iron Shot Tips

1. Stay within yourself.

Don`t try to hit your seven (7) iron one hundred and seventy (170) yards when your best seven iron shot only goes one hundred and fifty (150) yards. Hit the iron that will get to the target with a comfortable swing, no overswinging! Also, when you are determining the yardage for your iron shot, be sure to take into account the position of the pin on the green. By this I mean, even though you are standing at the one fifty (150) marker, you might be one hundred and sixty five (165) yards to the pin if the pin is at the back of a large green, or one hundred and thirty five (135) yards if the pin is in the front. You don`t want to back off of your golf swing but you also don`t want to be grunting!

2. Know how far you hit each iron.

I know you have seen this and it really slows down play. What I am talking about is watching someone pacing of their yardage to the pin and you know, full well, that they have no clue how far they hit each iron shot. So, my point is, that we need to spend some time at the driving/practice range, to find out how far we hit each iron shot. Now, we probably are not going to know how far each iron shot goes, to the yard, like the tour pros do but we can find out within a five (5) yard range. There is nothing more frustrating than hitting a good drive and following that up with a well hit iron shot and the golf ball ends up ten yards short or long. If we expect to hit the correct iron shot, we need to know how far we hit each iron.

3. Play the shot that your lie will allow.

We need to survey our lie and determine how the lie is going to effect our iron shot. By this I mean, if we a playing summer rules, no preferred lies, the lie will dictate what kind of shot we have to play. If the lie is less than perfect, we need to adjust where we play the golf ball in our stance. With a poor lie, we need to move the ball back in our stance so that we will be able to make solid contact. You also need to adjust for downhill, uphill and sidehill lies.

In general, we need to adjust our stance to follow the contour of the fairway for uneven lies, keeping in mind that uphill lies will add loft to your iron shots (hit more club) and downhill will take loft off of our iron shots (hit less club).

4. Play the percentages.

Here’s a question. If the best players in the world aim away from some pins then should not we do the same? If the pin is on the side of the green near a bunker, water hazard or out of bounds, it may make sense not to try to hit directly at the pin but hit your iron shot to the safer part of the green. We have to measure, the percentages, our chances of pulling off a shot. The best in the world do it! So, next time you are getting ready to hit your iron shot, stop to think of what is your best percentage play. This alone will shave numerous strokes of your golf score.

Also, remember there is a right and wrong side of the green to miss on. You would prefer to miss the green on the side away from where the pin is placed on the green. This gives you the best chance to get up and down for your par, if you miss the green.

Those are four (4) iron shot tips. There are many more, that we will discuss in future articles. But for now, if you follow these golf tips for your iron shots, you will dramatically increase your pars and decrease those bogeys and dreaded others!

The Perfect Score

What is the perfect score for a round of golf? Ben Hogan answered this question once but did not elaborate. So let’s find the answer step by step.

Playing scratch is the ultimate dream of all double digit handicappers though it is the single digit handicapper who does actually achieve it once in a while. It is not uncommon for a good pro, however, to play nearly error free golf and also score a few birdies, thus posting a score in the mid-60s. These pros, however, are within striking chance of a birdie on most of the holes they play and there is no reason to think that with some luck thrown in, one day somebody will birdie each of the 18 holes in a round.

Golf perfect Score

Yet, 54 is obviously not the perfect score for we have not taken into account the eagle possibilities in the par 5s, a real possibility with the long hitting pros today. If a player were to shoot all birdies in the other holes and also make eagles in all the par 5s, taking the average of four par 5s for a 18 hole course, the score will be 50.

But this leaves out the possibility of scoring holes in one, a real possibility. In fact, Arnold Palmer scored holes in one on the same par 3 hole on consecutive days of play. So, it is something which can be done and repeated too. Most people attribute holes in one entirely to luck. Yet, skill obviously plays a substantial part for only a well-struck ball gives luck a chance to hole it. No doubt, even a good shot requires luck to roll into the cup but we are talking of perfect score here. So assuming lots of luck, holes in one in all four par3s of a typical 18 hole golf course will give a score of 46 provided, of course, birdies and eagles are also made as described earlier. All this looks quite improbable but perfection is not something routine or probable.

I am sure you can guess that scores can conceivably be lower. Why, green in regulation for par 4 is two shots-far too many, some may say. Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Ernie Els and many others routinely drive the green in short par fours. In fact, the likes of J B Holmes and Bubba Watson are known to bomb 400 yard drives when they get going. And if you can reach the green in one shot, it shouldn’t be too difficult to putt the ball into the hole with your second stroke. It’s only an eagle. Suppose you could do it for all the ten par 4 holes in a round, your score goes down to 36. But, if you are such a long and accurate hitter so as to reach all the par 4s in one shot, it would not be too much to expect you to drive a par 5 within short wedge distance and then hole the wedge shot with a little luck. You would have scored an albatross. If Gene Sarazen could hole it at Augusta from 235 yards, surely you can do it from about a hundred odd yards you have left it to the hole after your first shot. If you could double- eagle all the four par 5s, then you have arrived at the score of 32 which is not bad but not perfect yet.

For, if you are reaching the par fours in one shot, you deserve the luck it takes to make the ball trickle into the hole. If you can reach it, you can hole it and if you can do it once, you can do it again. There is strong logic to that and golf mind-doctors would approve of the way you have not allowed any of the probability equations to clutter your mind. All that your mind recalls is that Swami Vivekananda scored a hole in one on a par four hole with his first golf shot ever. You have now arrived at the sweet score of 22.

Now, we are close but we need to take into account the long hitting champions with their so called illegal drivers who can sometimes touch 600 yards. And if you can reach a par five green in one shot, you can hole it too. It would, in fact, be surprising if you didn’t considering your consistent hole-in-one play on this round. Your score is now 18. You can’t go lower than that for even if you make the ball magically carry to the hole from the tee, it will either count as a stroke or you will have to play the shot again without penalty.
