How to Drive Long Off the Tee

It makes sense that we all want to know how to drive long off the tee. After all, more distance gives us shorter and easier approach shots to the green. Most of the golf swing instruction e-books offer to teach us how to add more distance. Most of them promise an extra few yards or so.

Golf Guides Book

These guide books, though, are aimed at the beginner or recreational golfer. They teach you everything about the golf swing; from the grip and setup, to the backswing and follow through. But if you are a more accomplished golfer that is looking for more detailed information about how to drive long, you will need to go to the distance golf experts.

Long Drivers of America

A good place to start is to visit the Long Drivers of America website. They are the official golf association for the Remax Long Drive Championship. These power golf swing freaks are all about attaining maximum golf distance. So, if you are interested in participating in the Re/Max World Long Drive Championship, then visit the LDA site.

Mike Austin

Incredibly, the Worlds longest golf drive has stood since 1974 . Golf legend, Mike Austin, holds the Guinness World Record for longest drive in a tournament, with a 515-yard drive – at the age of 64, during the 1974 U.S. National Senior Open in Las Vegas.

That was using a 43.5 inch steel-shafted, wood-headed driver! So obviously, the golf equipment doesn’t have that much to do with how far you can drive the ball. Though, today’s long drive champions use 2X or 3X, extra stiff shafts that are up to 50 inches, and driver lofts that are as low as 5 or 6 degrees.

Learn How To Drive Long

For most of us, we just want to learn how to drive long and to improve our general golf game. Even if you have a decent grip and swing, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you will have a good golf distance off the tee. The major factor that you need to improve is your golf club head speed . Every 1 mph of increased golf swing speed translates into about 2.5 yards of distance. If you increase your swing speed, you’ll increase your distance.

Of course, there are other factors involved if you want to learn how to drive long. Golf fitness training and flexibility go along way to improving, not just your distance, but your overall golf game. Another area of your game that you should work on is the mental game of golf. The above areas of golf are generally overlooked by the majority of golfers, but they are vitally important to take your game to a higher level.

So, if you really want to learn how to drive long, you will need a professional golf instructor who knows what is required for distance golf. If you are currently hitting drives of 200 yards, then adding a few yards to your drives won’t help you much. You need to find someone that has been where you are and who can now hit 350 to 430 yard drives.

Golf

golf

Golf is among the world’s most known and celebrated sports. Yet, golf surprisingly has a fewer number of participants than it deserve when compared to its world renown. Popular culture has it that golf is an elitist’s sport; a sport that requires weighty cost to enjoy.

True to the existing fact, golf did start as an elitist sport way back to the past in the medieval courts of Scotland and England. Golf was a sport these royals and the nobles play. The early golf variation differs slightly from the form played today and the only difference was the set of rules. As technology allowed more and more improvement to ball flight distance, it made outdated rules inappropriate and needs to be modified constantly.

In a nutshell, golf is still a game where individuals or group of individuals hit the Golf Ball using a variety of Golf Club. This sport is played on a tract of land called the Golf Course and can be noted for its series of holes. Depending on the challenge of the course, a golf course can have 9 to 18 holes. The 19th hole is the slang for the golf course’s club house where all players lounge and socialize.

When you say a ‘Tee’, it refers to the small peg used to prop the golf ball for a ‘Drive’, which means a longest manageable carry towards the green. Golf is won by the least number of strokes to land a hole; that taken into account, long drives, as well as controlling stroke, power, direction and spin are very necessary in winning a game.

Holes are classified according to ‘Par’, or the number of strokes set to win a hole, including passing all the course difficulties called as ‘Hazards’. These can take form as sand bunkers (like Pine Valley’s 13th green) or natural formations such as ponds (like TPC Sawgrass’ 17th hole) or even ruins (like Barefoot’s 6th green).

The rules of the game aren’t that complicated, in fact just reading and watching it isn’t intimidating at all. But still, fewer participants are engaging in its sport in relative to its fame. We go back to culture. In the past, lords and nobles engage in this sport. Naturally, aristocrat personalities have vast estates where they usually play. Commoners have only the pastures and meadows where landscape is often untended.

In the modern era, golf course speaks as much aesthetic in its landscape as well as challenge it poses. And maintaining such huge tracts of land can be very expensive. So owners of these courses just can lower the price just for everybody. Now come in the modern aristocrats in the shoes of the entrepreneurs and wealthy. They have the money to purchase the entire golf equipment that existed. They dress to kill. From there it isn’t hard to speculate how the golf culture was born.

Golf Long Drive Tips

Golf Long drive tips

The golf drive is a part of the game that a lot of golfers want to improve upon. It is often the first shot off the tee and is an essential shot in setting up your approach to the green.

When hitting a long drive many people try too hard to hit it a long distance, and very often miss-hit as a consequence. When I first began playing golf this was certainly a problem that I had. I would be trying to hit the ball as far as possible and the accuracy of the shot would decrease as a result. As you will know hitting a long drive is of little use if it ends up in the rough.

Despite what you might think being able to hit a long drive isn’t all about swinging the club harder, it is about swinging stronger. By that I mean you should concentrate on using the driving muscles that you use when you swing; the legs and back especially, rather than trying to get too much force from the arms only. If you concentrate too much on the arms during the swing you will find that the arms and hands will become tense which will slow down and hamper your swing.

This is why you will more than likely see many golfers who are able to hit a golf long drive at much greater distance than you, but seem to do so at relative ease. Once you learn how to hit the ball far on the drive though, with practice you will find it easier and easier to continually do so.

As with most things practice makes perfect. Some people will naturally be able to hit a long golf drive, but any golfer will tell you that consistency is essential. After all, what use is it hitting a long drive on the fairway on one hole, to then hit the next three into the rough?

One of the ways that I became more consistent with my long drive is by taking note of some golf long drive tips and then practicing what I’d been taught. Other people prefer to have instruction from professionals but this can be quite expensive. The driving range is a good place to practice new shots and swings. It may take some time to get used to any new tips that you’ve learnt but over time you will become better at the long drive.

I’ve bought many guides and training aids over the years and have learnt quite a lot from many that have lowered my handicap, but I’ve also bought several that offer very little practical advice.

How to Shape Your Golf Shots

Most golfers find it hard enough hit the ball straight, much less make the ball intentionally turn. But with a few simple steps, even a mid to high handicapper can start shaping golf shots and maybe even turn a few heads in the process. Hitting a golf shot that will turn in a specific direction is not only reserved for the scratch players!

To be fair, for 20+ handicappers this is not going to be something that you’ll do regularly to improve your score. But as a drill on the practice tee, if can really help to develop a feel for your swing and how your set up can impact the directional ball flight. If nothing else, this serves as a lesson in how much of an impact your set up can have. If you get that part right, the rest comes so much more easily.

Shape your golf shot

There are endless opportunities to use one of these shots. Golf course designs are just that, designs. They are crafted to present the player with a most desired action, but then make it interesting when you try to complete that action. For example, if there is water behind the green and a deep trap in the front left, what do you do? If you have a good draw, you hit a nice easy shot down the right side landing the ball well short of the water. With your draw, you’ll bounce and roll the ball right onto the green steering the ball clear of the sand and short of the water hazard. You don’t need high-tech golf club comparisons to figure out what club to use, either.

The lessons here can be done with most any shot, but is usually reserved for the approach. When it’s done right, it truly is a thing of beauty.

If you learn this, you won’t have to rely on your cool golf hat and new clubs to show off in front of your buddies! Let’s take a closer look at how to hit the ball with a draw:

To move the ball from right to left start with the ball a bit back in your stance. From there aim your feet, hips, and shoulders squarely but to the right of your target line depending on how much you want to hook it. With your stance set, now aim your club head directly towards the target and take your normal grip and swing making sure to take the club back along the line of your feet. This should be a “sweeping motion” instead of feeling as if your hitting “down” on the ball. Another feeling to strive for is to have grip pressure lighter in your left hand and firmer in your right. Easy as that! Practice this on the range and you’ll quickly become comfortable with hitting a draw. Now let’s look at it’s cousin, the fade:

A high fade is a great shot to have in your arsenal. It comes in handy when you need to hit a soft shot into a green or work a ball over or around an obstacle. Here is an easy and uncomplicated way to execute this shot:

Line your club face up at the target and then line your feet up to where you want your ball to start out to the left. Now as you make your swing you want to make sure that the “heel” of your club face stays ahead on the toe as the club head makes contact with your ball. Always swing along the line of your feet. Just break out your handy golf yardage scope, pick your weapon and follow the steps outlined above. This will produce a high fade that is one of the easiest shots in golf to hit.

You don’t need high-tech golf club comparisons to figure out what club to use, either. These lessons can be applied to most any club, but of course, you’ll probably focus on your mid-long irons. Try it out next time your on the range and perfect these shot saving techniques!
